Remote and unassisted onboarding for digital banking
Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD) is a Portuguese state-owned bank, the second-largest bank in Portugal. With a presence in 23 countries on four continents, CGD is managing customer deposits, loans, mortgages, insurance, mutual funds, and real estate leasing.
An important part of CGD’s digitalization plan is to make sure that customer identity verification is performed in a fast and secure manner in order to increase adherence to Digital Banking. This brings up two challenges.
Firstly, CGD needs to find a way to confirm the ID cards of the already registered customers on Netbanking. Secondly, CGD wants to activate the customer’s Digital Banking profile, without the necessity of visiting the branch.
How Polygon helped
Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD) partnered with Polygon to build a trust-worthy identity verification flow that would increase the user experience. The secure and frictionless process is powered by three of Polygon’s BiometrID technologies.
Document security validation and extraction (OCR) of all information, including the citizen’s picture.
Certified 3D Liveness Detection (2-second video selfie).
Facial Recognition for Authentication
The face in the ID is matched with the face in the selfie, authorizing ownership and authenticity.
To register remotely to Digital Banking, CGD’s clients are first required to take a picture of the front and back of their ID card. Polygon’s Document Validation technology is checking the security elements of the card, assessing if the document is authentic and valid. The OCR technology is extracting
information such as the Civil Information Number and photograph.
The following step is taking a 2 seconds selfie. Our facial recognition technology will match the face in the selfie with the document picture, authorizing the ownership. To combat rising frauding attempts, 3D liveness detection is performed to assure that in front of the camera is a living person. This means that photos, silicon masks, or any other lookalike artefacts cannot trick the system.
Polygon’s liveness detection holds iBeta level 1 and level 2 certifications and has a unique 3D template creation that makes spoofing virtually impossible. The same flow is used as well to confirm the ID cards of already existing clients.
By implementing Polygon’s solutions, Caixa Geral de Depósitos has now a secure and efficient identity verification that allows customers to access Digital Banking from their homes, without the need of visiting a bank branch.
Looking forward, CGD plans to extend the identity verification process for credentials recovery.
